Q & A

Whats the best thing to happen to you in your career to date?

I particularly enjoyed the experience of writing the Mixmag cover story on Belgian producer and DJ Amelie Lens. I was able to spend a whole day and night with her for the interview -- a very rare luxury these days -- and managed to extract an engaging, revealing story that had not been told before.

What does a typical work week look like for you?:

Copywriting, content creation, journalism, consulting, editing, proofreading -- a mix of all of the above! I've been freelancing for the past couple of years and enjoy the variety it offers. No two days (or weeks) are the same!

Describe your working environment in a few sentences..

I rent a desk at my friend's office in Prahran, Melbourne. We are disciplined and productive, then enjoy a quick natter during our well-earned breaks before it's back to work! Good coffee is also nearby, in every direction.

What sets you apart from other freelancers in your industry?

The scope of what I offer is much broader than most. I'm a journalist who spent ten years writing and reporting for The Age in Melbourne. I'm also a seasoned copywriter who has worked for a range of high-profile clients including the luxury line of Accor Hotels, The Australian Ballet and the City of Melbourne. I specialise in culture and lifestyle -- arts, music, food, entertainment, travel, fashion, health and wellness -- but equally have experience in writing about business, retail and real estate. I can also edit and digitally produce content, and have worked as a social media manager. I'm your one-stop shop for content!

What are the tools of your trade?

Er, generally just a laptop! But if by this you mean skills -- writing, researching, ideation, internal and external comms, interviewing, editing, proofreading, digital production, social media...

Do you collaborate with others? If yes, how does that works?

Often. As a journalist I collaborate with editors on a regular basis and while working at The Age would often work with designers, artists and photographers, too, along with fellow journalists and editors. As a copywriting I am liaising with agencies and clients regularly and sometimes with other agency staff. As much as I enjoy working autonomously, I love sharing ideas and working with others to achieve a common goal.

Whats been the biggest freelancing lesson to date?

Probably when I was living in Paris for two years and had to build up a whole new network of contacts.
