Astra Dadzis

I am a great all-rounder. I am journalist by trade, followed by more than 12 years’ experience in communication roles, resulting in a highly versatile skill set. I completed a cadetship with News Limited quite a few years ago, following that up with a successful career, primarily in television, before moving on to communications roles.

These have included government public affairs, community/member-based not-for-profit organisations and large organisations.

My true passion is writing, and that is where I focus my freelance work. I am experienced in producing content for a variety of marketing and communications tasks, with a solid track record in developing engaging, relevant and accurate material. I have a proven ability to research and compile accurate information, to engage succinctly and, appropriately, using a variety of writing styles and formats to appeal to a variety of targeted audiences and for all mediums.

Most critically I am adept at truncating overly complicated and lengthy material and transforming it into a concise, readable document.

Q & A

Whats the best thing to happen to you in your career to date?

In the 1990's I had the privilege of working on a documentary about Southern Right Whales called Giants of the Nullarbor. Not only was the production and writing of a documentary a fantastic challenge, I actually got to swim with the whales. Amazing, and an unreal feeling to this day.

What does a typical work week look like for you?:

There is no such thing as a typical working week and this has pretty much applied to my entire working life. Consequently, typically, I will be agile and prepared for anything.

Describe your working environment in a few sentences..

I am accustomed to working anywhere, with technology assisting in that portability. When I am working at home it is a quiet environment, with the beach a two-minute walk away - great for clearing the head and getting the mind back on track when needed.

What sets you apart from other freelancers in your industry?

I believe I have a rare and diverse skill set, and a wealth of experience in equally varied workplaces, including the pressure cooker environments of the mainstream media and politics, and industries.

What are the tools of your trade?

Laptop of course, camera, voice recorder. I am proficient in: Office Suite 2016 & 365 | In Design | Acrobat Pro | Acrobat Illustrator | Scribus |Mail Chimp | Sales Force | High Rise| Reach Mail | Isentia | Vision 6 | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | Linked In | SharePoint | You Tube | Vimeo | WordPress

Do you collaborate with others? If yes, how does that works?

Most projects involve collaboration. It is important to ensure information is correct and the work you are delivering meets a client’s needs. The people you collaborate with can be as diverse as the projects themselves - from CEO's, managers or project managers. As a freelancer, when it comes to the skills required to produce a document I try to be a “one stop shop”, but have also collaborated with designers when more complicated design is involved, and any other professionals as needed.

Whats been the biggest freelancing lesson to date?

No matter how much you think you know, the client is always right!
