Cameron Pegg

I help clients to tell stories that transform their business.

Good content is good content, regardless of the format, channel, or sector. I’m equally comfortable working with charities, startups, and universities, as I am with global mining companies.

I’m a big advocate for new technologies and approaches, while respecting the power of the written word, and the beauty of print.

For some clients, I come in at the start to devise concepts and strategies. For others, I produce specific content and outputs (copy, publications, advertising creative, speeches, presentations, and so on). Sometimes, I’m brought in as an adviser to revise existing work, and provide fresh perspectives and solutions.

I’m a doer, and I thrive in all of these capacities.

Q & A

Whats the best thing to happen to you in your career to date?

Every client brief is an opportunity to make a positive difference. When I write an application for an award, or a grant, or a piece of fundraising copy, success can be readily measured (and 2019 was a strong year in that regard!) In other cases, the KPIs are more qualitative. Whenever I help a client to achieve their goals, that’s a win.

What does a typical work week look like for you?:

I keep regular weekday hours, but given I work for clients across time zones, and am asked to assist with urgent projects, I put in the hours required to meet the respective deadline. This flexibility is a point of difference compared to traditional creative agencies.

Describe your working environment in a few sentences..

A calm place where I am relaxed, creative, and productive. See also – close to excellent coffee!

What sets you apart from other freelancers in your industry?

I have an unusually diverse skillset in that I can write, edit, devise concepts, and oversee print and digital projects of all kinds. I remain an active journalist, and regularly contribute features to The Australian, and have a regular spot on ABC Radio. This work has been shortlisted for major awards, judged by peers, which is gratifying.

Over a 15-year career, I have developed particular expertise in speechwriting and ghostwriting, corporate communications training, fundraising copywriting, and data-driven storytelling (including infographics).

I was the sole Australian invited to speak at the ContentEd Conference in 2018 and 2019 – a leading European event for content strategists. I am constantly inspired by the great work produced by others.

What are the tools of your trade?

Google Drive!

Do you collaborate with others? If yes, how does that works?

When the project requires it, I bring on board trusted design and communications colleagues. I love the contributions they make, and what I learn from them in the process. I am also comfortable collaborating with in-house or agency teams, to complement their strengths.

Whats been the biggest freelancing lesson to date?

Transparency in the briefing stage – particularly regarding timelines, expected outcomes, and cost. If all parties on the same page from the start, the project is positioned for success.
