Carly West

Chalkboard Communications

Hi there! I'm Carly, Founder and Managing Director of Chalkboard Communications.

Chalkboard is a Perth-based, boutique communications agency helping purpose-driven, ethical business tell their story. We support clients with a social or environmental focus to communicate their purpose, increase their visibility and thrive.

Working exclusively with the changemakers - including start-ups, NFP & social enterprise, eco-business, the public sector and global organisations - we help tell the stories that matter most.

I am fortunate to have over 15 years of experience working in-house and as a consultant for some of Australia's largest and well-known ASX-listed corporates, not-for-profits, private SMEs and advocacy organisations. I’ve helped them build and manage their reputations and deliver communications campaigns that help them succeed.

I’ve been a do-er, a team leader, a spokesperson, an adviser to CEOs and Boards, an external consultant and a volunteer.

As the Managing Director of Chalkboard Communications I am grateful to have the opportunity to draw on this breadth of experience to collaborate exclusively with clients that are doing great things. I share their passion and belief for a better future – for people, for communities and for the world.

I'm always happy to have an obligation-free chat with prospective clients to see if we might be a good fit for each other, so please feel free to get in touch.

Q & A

Whats the best thing to happen to you in your career to date?

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities I've had throughout my career. I started out working for a leading not-for-profit in WA before spending another 11 years in various roles within large, ASX-listed organisations and consulting to some inspiring SMEs. I've worked across all aspects of communications and marketing and been a part of some fantastic campaigns.

What does a typical work week look like for you?:

I work flexibly so no two weeks are the same! I am a proud mum to three kids so I'm big on planning my weeks around client schedules, deadlines and my own time for creative thought. I never commit to anything I can't deliver so I'm always open to saying 'no' upfront and referring work to my trusted network.

Describe your working environment in a few sentences..

I partner with some wonderful creatives to deliver really powerful, bold campaigns for clients. This means we're often sitting in their studio, at a café or on the grass nutting out how we're going to make our latest project even greater than the last. My home office is my place for writing and planning.

What sets you apart from other freelancers in your industry?

I understand what drives business and I have a really broad skill-set across many sectors. I've led communications and media campaigns, major crisis response and State-wide events. I've written countless communications strategies, media releases, annual reports and speeches. I've been a do-er, a manager and everything in between. No job is too small - I'm a believer in doing whatever it takes to get the job done. My approach always starts with a conversation about client purpose and business objectives and everything I deliver links back to this.

What are the tools of your trade?

My light-weight Surface Pro, my phone, a reusable coffee cup and lots of Apps for photo editing, video editing, podcasts and music.

Do you collaborate with others? If yes, how does that works?

Yes, absolutely! I lead a small collective of strategic and creative thinkers who are committed to telling the stories that matter most. I lead the strategic direction, content and delivery and leave the creative part to the brand strategists, graphic designers, web developers, photographers, videographers and digital experts. Together, we're a group of passionate communicators who know how to make an impact.

Whats been the biggest freelancing lesson to date?

Always be generous with your time and advice but don't make a habit of working for free unless you've agreed on a pro bono arrangement. Clients who respect your time and expertise are worth everything.
