Jane Clement

Clement Communication Pty Ltd

I love taming unruly words and I've been lucky enough to make a living out of it for more than twenty years.

I work as a freelance writer, editor and consultant for large corporations (e.g. IBM, ANZ, Ernst & Young, Woolworths), medium-sized companies, government departments and agencies. I help them with all kinds of corporate communications, B2B and consumer marketing campaigns, employee communications, CEO ghostwriting and public information projects.,

My happy place is working on projects that other writers and editors find too complex, difficult or obtuse. Bring me your sustainability reporting suites, technical websites, public discussion papers, white papers, tenders and thought leadership articles - I love them!

That's not the end of it though. I like to get creative and I was born to wrangle words, so don't put me in the strictly corporate box. You can talk to me about all things print, digital and spoken, from campaign taglines and bus shelter advertising to speeches and radio scripts. If your project involves using the wonders of the English language to inform, persuade or engage people, I'm in.

My pre-freelance background gives me a unique perspective on writing and editing. Producing shows for BBC TV and ABC Radio honed my journalistic talents. Being an in-house marcomms and publications manager developed my strategic capabilities. Working at a boutique PR agency for clients such as Apple and Telstra developed my client management skills.

When I finally realised that writing and editing was my favourite part of PR and decided to focus on that, it was as though the rest of my career had been leading up to this point. Two decades later, I’m still drawing on my multi-faceted background while continuing to learn something new every day.

If you're impressed by qualifications, I have a BA (Hons) English and an MA in Palaeography (that’s the history of handwriting, not the study of dinosaur bones).

Q & A

Whats the best thing to happen to you in your career to date?

The best thing that happened to me professionally was being made redundant from my role as Creative Director at a boutique technology marcomms agency. It was the impetus I needed to set up my own business.

What does a typical work week look like for you?:

There is no typical week - that's why I love freelancing. One week, I'm writing a CEO blog series, an EDM flyer, billboard copy and a staff magazine. The next, I'll be creating taglines for a consumer marketing campaign and editing an annual report.

Describe your working environment in a few sentences..

Laptop, tea, dog. Draft, edit, polish. Swear, rethink, smile.

What sets you apart from other freelancers in your industry?

Reasons you should hire me:

#1 I'll bring a high level of maturity, strategic thinking and insight to your project.

#2 I appreciate my clients' challenges because I've faced them too - I've worked in-house for corporations, governments and agencies.

#3 I'm really versatile. I've written in every medium you can think of.

#4 I'm a pedantic editor. My copy of Eats, Shoots and Leaves is well-thumbed.

#5 I’m a trained journalist, so I never miss a deadline, am great at research and can find a good hook for any story.

#6 I will deliver the goods. You can rely on me to create order out of chaos, turn jargon into everyday language and transform an ugly draft into a thing of beauty.

What are the tools of your trade?

Strategic thinking, word wrangling and creativity.

Do you collaborate with others? If yes, how does that works?

My background in marketing and communications project management means I can collaborate with anyone in the production chain, from designers and videographers to publishers and event managers. I work for clients around the world, so I'm frequently part of a virtual client/production team.

Whats been the biggest freelancing lesson to date?

Don't assume anything. I ask lots of questions during the briefing process so I can deliver exactly what my client wants.
