Katharina Surtees

I'm a professional voice over artist which has been the voice of many commercials since 1996. My journey into the industry started at the age of 15, when I was asked by a promotional company to be the live voice for the department stores and stores in Perth city and shopping centres. After years of working in promotions, owning a modelling agency & academy where she hosted fashion events, comparing fashion parades and competitions all around Perth, she decided to transform her voice and her presenting career into a full time gig. I eagerly went to The Academy of Radio, where I learnt about the radio industry, voicing commercials, presenting on-air shows, reading and writing news, and production. During the course I was offered my first radio presenting position at Kalgoorlie’s 6KG. I was then approached by the Network of Radio West to be the female announcer that hosted “Love Songs After Dark”, then afternoon drive shift. I also filled in as newsreader and producer. HOT FM evolved and I was asked to be the first female announcer on the station. Before I knew it, I was hosting nights on the Hot 30 Countdown, doing occasional weekend shift, voicing hundreds of commercials both throughout W.A and Queensland. I was also approached by GWN to voice TV commercials. I started training for mid dawns at 94.5fm and chose to take the path to focus on her first love… voicing commercials. Since then, I have voiced commercials via radio and TV for 92.9, 94.5, 96fm, 6PR, Channel 7 & Channel 9. Today, I continue to grow my passion for V/Os and adding a new string to her bow.. presenting visuals for film. Q & A

Whats the best thing to happen to you in your career to date?

I loved woking on a 7 hour recording project for St Johns Ambulance. I love how my voice will be there when someone is in a crisis and I calmly take the person through the steps on how to safe a life. So very rewarding. I'm also working on a very special project preventing child and teenage suicide called The Magic Coat for Kids. So privileged to be able to use my voice for good.

What does a typical work week look like for you?:

I will check my phone/emails for jobs offered in the week and get started confirming and recording. On my quite days, I head into my shared space in the city and find leads and network. Social media plays a big part on these days.
