Telling stories has been Lia Shaw's passion and favourite pastime since she was first published at the tender age of eight. Seeing the words she'd so meticulously crafted grace the printed page gave her a thrill which instantly dashed all other career ambitions, leaving one clear choice – writer!

She eagerly pursued a career in the world of print journalism; happily finding herself in a privileged position to share the stories of the many intriguing people she met and places she visited in news and lifestyle publications across Australia.

Roles in public relations and corporate communications soon followed, and before long Lia discovered the joy of telling compelling brand stories; and learned the mysterious art of non-profit copywriting. Q & A

Whats the best thing to happen to you in your career to date?

Spending several years working in non-profit communications. It opened my eyes to the importance and impact of razor-sharp copy when it comes to reaching readers' hearts - and inspiring them to open their wallets.

What does a typical work week look like for you?:

Early morning starts and lots of client meetings. In the evening, I love nothing more than to unwind with my beautiful family - and once the chaos of kids' bedtimes has settled, the best creative ideas often strike! So you'll usually find me brainstorming new projects and catching up with international clients late into the night.

Describe your working environment in a few sentences..

Ever-changing! A plane, a photo shoot or at the park - no matter where I am, with my computer and phone, I'm constantly connected.

What sets you apart from other freelancers in your industry?

My extensive journalistic experience, creative flair and genuine passion for developing sparkling copy. I believe the best working relationships are seamless - my collaborative approach will see us working in partnership to achieve the best possible results; and will ensure you feel as if your brand has gained an experienced member of staff, rather than simply engaged an outsider.

What are the tools of your trade?

My computer, phone, a notebook and pen, and a large cup of coffee!

Do you collaborate with others? If yes, how does that works?

Absolutely - with everyone from marketing consultants to photographers, graphic designers and printers. The ability to collaborate with other suppliers or in-house creatives across the same project often brings improved results through mutual understanding and shared creativity.

Whats been the biggest freelancing lesson to date?

The importance of a comprehensive brief. Although it takes time, it's time well-spent in ensuring my client and I are completely on the same page (no pun intended!).
