Wendy McWilliams

WMC Public Relations Pty Ltd

I love what I do! Helping clients achieve their PR objectives. For more than 15 years, I have been developing and implementing innovative, proactive and cost effective PR programs that are focused on delivering results for clients. While I provide a comprehensive range of PR services with publicity and promotion at the top of that list, I do specialise in newsletters, brochures, advertisements and other material that require copywriting and graphic design. I also have expertise in producing videos and websites. I am a strong believer in people and companies promoting their brand and ensuring it gets the recognition it deserves to take advantage of the benefits this can deliver. Since 2011 I have been writing a monthly blog/newsletter where I share my knowledge and insights to help anyone interested in promoting their brand and organisation. https://wmcpr.com.au/blog/ I’ve now started doing video blogs on PR topics, which you can view here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCx-HibAm_MfQshN6JSbRtLw Some of our clients have been with us for 10 years and for one client, Knox City Council, it’s been more than 20 years that we have produced their B2B 16 page newsletter. So we must be doing something right! Basically, we really love our clients and do whatever we can to get results for them. I am a member of the PRIA (Public Relations Institute of Australia) and have worked in PR agencies in London (six years) and Sydney (four years) following which I moved to Melbourne where I set up my own successful consultancy. On a personal level, I love birdwatching, playing competitive squash, hitting a round of golf occasionally and spending time with family and friends.

Q & A

Whats the best thing to happen to you in your career to date?

No one best thing, except establishing the consultancy. What's the best is all the wonderful people and clients we have met and worked with.

What does a typical work week look like for you?:

Monday to Friday it's a mix of client work, developing new business, networking, etc. Sometimes if there's an urgent job on, I'll work on the weekend.

Describe your working environment in a few sentences..

On a large desk are lots of trays that are stacked up on top of one another that each have a client file in them, usually with newspaper clippings on top that I've pulled out of the dailies to see if we can generate a story out of them. Lovely big windows that let natural light in.

What sets you apart from other freelancers in your industry?

I have broad experience plus excellent copywriting skills so can offer the full gamut of PR services. We are cost effective and get results for our clients.

What are the tools of your trade?

My knowledge for one. And also my media contacts. Then I use Influencing for our media database.

Do you collaborate with others? If yes, how does that works?

From time to time we do use other PR consultants and writers. Plus we have our own team of a graphic designer, web designer and videographer with whom we have worked for more than 10 years.

Whats been the biggest freelancing lesson to date?

I now don't pitch for jobs if the project doesn't get me excited.
